Drawing is my first love. Toothy Paper and charcoal create a stunning yet messy combination of deep velvet texture to dusty detail marks. Fine felt pen on a fresh sheet of 110lb crisp snow white paper is so inviting and terrifying. Pencils of all kinds call to create history, birthing young lines that sometimes fade and sometimes stay for a lifetime. Making marks like rapid fire, energizing the page as if it's alive and about to envelop you or so subtle you have to move in close to see it as though it is whispering, "Come closer," so it can jump into your body and take up residence. Line, I love the sharp crispness of digital drawing and the fun, whimsical styles I can achieve on the go while still creating a narrative of the daily.
Collage, the challenge to find space for the narrative. Combining the precious with the mundane.
Then there is ceramics, porcelain, and refined white china that is strong yet supple and delicate; the contradiction is beautiful, peaceful and intimidating.
I must create and have been moved to transform. Finding beauty to ease the ugly.
Ceramics and drawing are a perfect couple. Both need to show off, and one acts as a beautiful canvas for the other, allowing them to share the fame.
I also love to "teach" art. In brackets, I am constantly learning and only sharing my limited knowledge. Most do fine independently; I create a path for their perspective. Making art with others is a joy and offers critical dialogue to help guide my practice.
